REVIEWS INTERNATIONAL

"Gachot...crafts a silky, soft-spoken love poem to both Caymmi and Rio" Variety

It is impossible not to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro after watching Rio Sonata... Marrying the breathtaking views of Rio to the warmth and romantic voice of Caymmi, Gachot tells a story that targets our hearts and senses.
Anyone having a sensitive cord in their body will be moved. Let yourself be transported by the emerald-turquoise-wave of this film and see why George Gachot's work is in the FIFA's competition list. The Link

"One sequence in particular shows what she means to her fans; at a daylight concert, the camera peers over her shoulder to show the rapt faces of people in the front rows. It reminds you of what someone once said when jazz pianist Art Tatum made an appearance: "God is in the house." Vancouver Sun

Nana Caymmi is the guardian of an unrivaled musical heritage. She is the daughter of emblematic composer Dorival Caymmi, former wife of Gilberto Gil, muse of Milton Nascimento, and childhood friend of Nelson Freire and seen by her peers as Brazil's greatest singer and cited by journalist Roberto Moura as "The singer's singer". After 6 years of production the film was released in autumn 2010.

(Deutsch)

BIOGRAPHY OF NANA CAYMMI

REVIEWS in Portugese

Nana Caymmi was born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 29th 1941. She comes from one of the most important families of the Brazilian music scene: her father, the legendary composer Dorival Caymmi, carried the rich traditions of the state of Bahia, composed songs about the sea, and wrote international hits performed by Carmen Miranda. Her two brothers Dori and Danilo are also important musicians. But Nana Caymmi herself is a well-established singer, as shown by her extensive discography and two gold records. She sang with giants such as Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim or Maria Bethânia. Nana Caymmi is regarded by her peers as "the singer's singer".

Alongside traditional popular Brazilian music, there was plenty of room in the Caymmi household for classical music and Nana - who started to play the piano at the age of 4 - was familiar with Debussy, Franck, Ravel or Sati. Later, she met the pianist Nelson Freire, since they had the same piano teacher. Nana Caymmi made her first studio recording at the age of 19 with her father, singing Acalanto, a lullaby that he composed for her when she was a baby. After marrying a Venezuelan doctor, she moved to Caracas - her love for boleros comes from this period. Four years later, with two children, pregnant, and divorced, she came back to Rio and immediately won the first prize of the highly popular Song Festival in 1966 (FIC), with a song called Saveiros composed by her brother Dori Caymmi and Nelson Motta. This was a turning point in her career: after that, she met the Tropicalia people like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa - but did not join their movement. Then, she married Gilberto Gil and together, they participated to the Third Brazilian Popular Music Festival 1967, performing their song Bom Dia. Around 1970, during the dictatorship, she often worked in Uruguai and Argentina and recorded an album there. With her album "Nana Caymmi" in 1975, the journalist Tarik de Souza called her the "Nina Simone from Brazil", and Caetano Veloso talked of her interpretation of Medo de Amar from Vinicuis de Moraes, as one the most expressive in Brazilian music.

Over her 50 years of career, Nana Caymmi was awarded many times in Brazil for Best Female Singer of the Year and recorded, 40 albums - two of them won gold disc awards and one "Latin Grammy" in 2004. Her songs have often been used in telenovelas. For example in 1999, her album Resposta ao tempo - which was included in the soundtrack of the soap opera Hilda Furacão - sold 100,000 copies. In 2011, she will participate to the soundtrack of a TV Novela dedicated to her father Dorival Caymmi for TV Globo.

Even if Nana Caymmi's career mainly grew in South America, she also worked in the United States and performed at international venues as prestigious as the Blue Note in New York, or twice to the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jornal do Brasil

A Gazeta Globo
